Comedy News: The Art of Comedy

In our new club on Occidental Park, we have an open space called "lobby" on the blueprint - just a big area between the showroom and the stairs down from Swannie's. We thought "this would make a great gallery. . ." - and so it shall be!

Thanks to the efforts of comic/artist/gallery owner Rosalie Gale, we will continue to participate in Seattle's fantastic First Thursday Art Walk: On Thursday, April 2, 2009, Urban Craft Uprising and Comedy Underground are teaming up to once again bring you the Art of Comedy.

When we decided to open our doors to local artists who use humor and beguiling sensibilities in their work, we called on Urban Craft Uprising, organizers of the largest indie craft show in the Pacific Northwest. They will be joined by featured artist:

KELLY LYLES - Painting

ARTIST'S STATEMENT:
Life is a lot of fun, and I'd like the viewers to share that in my work. This series is whimsical paintings of animals with "All-American" household products (ie, SPAM-STER, MICE-A-RONI, STAR-DUCKS coffee, etc). In these, there are subliminal messages regarding "mass-media, marketing, consumerism" et al. But primarily these are a simple love of animals, verbiage and the physical representation of the wordplay, scale and juxtaposition of such disparate subject matter, based on puns and alliteration.
My paintings (and sculptural Artcars) have been shown all over the U.S., in galleries and a few Museums. My studio, home & Artcars have been featured in innumerable television shows and magazine/newspaper articles. A bibliography would include Harrod Blank’s 2 ‘Artcars’ books and his '08 film. Weird Washington book. National Television (Travel channel, Discovery, Odyssey Network, HGTV), International (Canada's Weird Wheels) & local television (Northwest Afternoon, Evening Magazine), local News, Public Radio, local, national (NY Times) and world newspapers (South African, Italian) and magazines (Woman’s World, National Geographic Kids).

The exhibit will be followed at 9 PM by an evening of stand-up comedy, with headliner SEAN KENT ("Last Comic Standing").
