Comedy News: HASTE MAKES WASTE

I’m often criticized for waiting until the last minute to book performers. I say there’s a method to my madness in that delaying until the 11th hour provides an opportunity to get national talk show publicity when a performer calls and says, “I just got ‘Letterman’ and I need a date out of town that Dave can plug.” Anyway, that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

So it was with great relief last August when I heard from our esteemed club manager Ron Reid that someone named Hannibal Buress was about to do “Jimmy Fallon” and was offering to get us a plug if we booked him. Ron assured me that Hannibal was brilliant but, hey, I’ve heard that before. Ron is a former comic and it sometimes seems he thinks that just about every act (other than those I actually book) is a comedy genius.

It turned out to be true though. Hannibal (now there’s a name that doesn’t take an elephant to remember) killed on TV and attendance at the club benefited when he flew into Seattle directly from the taping. Now it turns out we weren’t the only ones who were rewarded. Hannibal has been hired by “Saturday Night Live” as a writer after being seen making that very same “Fallon”appearance. Anyone who caught that hilarious golf skit with Charles Barkley on SNL last month; that was Hannibal’s work you were watching.
